Manual Acupuncture Shown to Alleviate Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain

A preclinical study published in the American Medical Journal examined how manual acupuncture may help reduce rheumatoid arthritis pain. Using a rat model of rheumatoid arthritis, researchers found that manual acupuncture with needle manipulation increased pain tolerance and reduced inflammatory markers in the spinal cord linked to arthritis pain. The treatment also reduced activation of spinal immune cells involved in neuroinflammation. Notably, manual acupuncture outperformed simple needling without manipulation, suggesting that specific needle techniques may play an important role in acupuncture’s pain relieving effects.

Electrical Acupoint Stimulation Could Aid in Reducing Pediatric Myopia Incidence

A clinical trial evaluated eye transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in children at risk of developing myopia. The multicenter study followed 680 children ages 6 to 12 with pre myopia for 48 weeks. Children using the stimulation device developed myopia less often than those receiving sham treatment, with a 29 percent lower incidence. The treatment group also showed slower changes in vision and reduced eye growth linked to myopia progression. No serious adverse events were reported, suggesting the approach may offer a safe option to help delay the onset of myopia in children.
