Cheek acupuncture reduces postoperative sore throat after double-lumen

The Journal of Pain Research published a randomized controlled trial demonstrating that cheek acupuncture significantly reduces postoperative sore throat and nausea following thoracic surgery. Practitioners utilized thumbtack needles at the bilateral cervical, upper energizer, and upper cervical cheek acupoints for 30 minutes prior to surgery completion. This targeted micro-needle protocol decreased the 48-hour incidence of sore throat from 65.9% to 34.1%. The intervention also safely lowered early surgical wound pain and rescue analgesic requirements.
