Neuroplastic Mechanisms of Acupuncture in Post-Stroke Motor Recovery

CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics published a randomized multimodal MRI trial investigating the neuroplastic mechanisms of acupuncture for post-stroke hemiparesis. Over a two-week regimen, patients receiving true-acupoint stimulation showed significantly greater gains in Brunnstrom and Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) motor scores compared to sham controls. MRI revealed that targeted acupuncture increased gray matter volume in the postcentral gyrus and cerebellar regions while stabilizing default mode network dynamics. These findings confirm acupuncture’s capacity to drive structural brain reorganization, facilitating superior motor recovery.
