RESEARCH

A randomized clinical trial of 120 adults with migraine without aura found that acupuncture led to greater pain relief and functional improvement compared with sham treatment. Participants receiving real acupuncture had fewer migraine and headache days, reduced medication use, lower pain and disability scores, and improved quality of life. Brain imaging showed that patterns of resting brain connectivity could predict who benefited most from treatment. These findings suggest acupuncture is effective for migraine and that brain network data may help guide more personalized care.

Researchers reviewed 13 randomized clinical trials involving 865 patients with septic gastrointestinal dysfunction to assess whether acupuncture adds benefit to standard care. When used alongside conventional treatment, acupuncture was associated with lower intra abdominal pressure, reduced gastrointestinal injury severity, improved bowel activity, and lower illness severity scores. No significant differences were seen in 28 day mortality or adverse events. These initial findings suggest acupuncture may be a safe supportive therapy for improving gastrointestinal function in septic patients.
